The BJP-led Goa government’s recent decision to change the official name of the 16th-century Pelourinho Novo pillar in Old Goa to “Haat Katro Khambo” (Hand-Cutting Pillar) is unfortunate. Instead of addressing present-day issues, Chief Minister Sawant and his government appear focused on the Portuguese legacy and Goa’s past. Such moves, along with controversies involving culture, religion, language and history, risk creating divisions among Goans. The Portuguese left Goa decades ago, yet their legacy continues to be debated. While Portuguese rule was marked by strict punishments, Goa today faces serious concerns over crime and allegations involving public representatives. Questions also arise when accused individuals appear to receive preferential treatment.The Portuguese citizenship route has also benefited many Goans, enabling them to work and build lives across Europe. This legacy continues to have an impact on families. Rather than attempting to rewrite history, the government should focus on Goa’s present and future. A responsible leadership should unite people instead of politicising sensitive issues involving history, religion, language and cultural identity. Goa needs development and harmony, not division.
