A correctional home is supposed to serve a clear purpose which is to correct, reform and prepare inmates to return to society as responsible citizens. But from reports there appears to be an entire world of its own inside the Colvale jail. A world where certain inmates allegedly have access to comforts that many ordinary citizens can only afford occasionally. Reports suggest that inmates can obtain a variety of dishes at prices that may compare with what one would pay for a meal at a fine dining establishment. The reported seizure of drugs and mobile phones from inside the jail raises serious questions about security and supervision. There are also reports that some cells have television connections. Is Colvale jail really a correctional home or has it become a “home away from home”? The concern arises when such comforts exist alongside allegations of drugs, unauthorized mobile phones and an informal economy operating within the prison. If inmates are purchasing expensive food and other comforts, authorities must establish how these funds are reaching them. Colvale jail deserves transparency in its functioning. A transparent investigation can put all allegations to rest.
