Playgrounds are essential to nurture football talent

There was a time in Goa when young and old played football anywhere, whether on playgrounds, fields or open spaces. During school holidays, a football and a few friends were enough to start a game. Inter-village tournaments were fiercely competitive, attracting huge crowds and passionate supporters. Today, it is difficult to field even one village team comprising 11 local players. Open spaces have disappeared under buildings, while fields are either cultivated or unavailable for playing. Ironically, many of Goa’s finest footballers emerged from such grounds. Saligao, which produced footballers who represented India, still lacks a football ground. Earlier, players proudly represented their own villages, creating strong rivalries and a sense of belonging. Special buses carried supporters to cheer their teams. Players were satisfied with refreshments, as representing their village was itself a matter of pride. Today, players are often borrowed from other villages, weakening this connection. Playgrounds are essential to nurture sporting talent. Schools must encourage sports alongside studies. Village clubs need greater support from sports bodies. Football is Goa’s State sport. The government must provide facilities, encourage local talent and restore its lost glory.
