The newly opened Porvorim flyover (Elevated Corridor) is intended to improve traffic movement and should be available to all permitted vehicles, including two-wheelers, subject to proper safety and traffic rules. The temporary ban on two-wheelers by the Goa Public Works Department (PWD), citing safety concerns and accidents near service-road exits, is a matter of concern. Instead of prohibiting an entire category of vehicles, authorities should identify the causes of accidents and introduce effective preventive measures. Two-wheeler riders are currently being directed to use the ground-level service roads. It is also understood that entry and exit points from the service roads on the Guirim and Majestic sides have been closed or restricted to manage traffic flow. If a traffic-management system is in place, it should be effectively implemented and monitored. Proper signage, speed control, lane discipline, lighting, barriers and enforcement can help prevent accidents. Human errors should also be addressed through better road design and traffic management, rather than imposing blanket restrictions. The flyover should be safely opened to all eligible vehicles in the public interest.
