Respect elders’ time

The annual programme organised to mark World Elders Day was scheduled to commence at 9.30 a.m. The audience, including those selected for felicitations, had taken their seats and were patiently waiting for the programme to begin. The Chief Guest was conspicuous by his absence. The three political dignitaries — Vijay Sardesai, Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva — arrived together only around 10.30 a.m., an hour after the scheduled start.

Their late arrival was regrettable and showed a lack of punctuality and consideration for the senior citizens who had assembled on time. It is particularly disappointing when a programme organised to honour elders makes them wait for political dignitaries. The organisers should reconsider inviting political personalities merely in the hope of financial assistance. If dignitaries cannot honour the scheduled time, the programme should proceed as planned, allowing them to join later. Respect for elders must also mean respecting their time.
