The nationwide protests against the alleged NEET paper leakage have found resonance in Goa, where students joined demonstrations organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right, and students have every reason to voice their grievances. However, exercising this right also carries the responsibility of respecting public spaces, especially those of historical and national importance. During the protest at Azad Maidan, some students were reportedly seen smoking and leaving behind empty bottles near the Martyrs' Memorial. Such behaviour amounts to disrespect towards a monument dedicated to the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in Goa's struggle for liberation from Portuguese rule. It is possible that some of the students involved were from other states and are studying in Goa. While this may explain their actions, it does not justify them. Another concern is that some individuals are often seen sleeping at the base of the memorial at odd hours. Posting security personnel at the site throughout the day would help prevent misuse and ensure that visitors conduct themselves appropriately. Clearly visible signboards should also be installed.
