Reigning European champions Spain have become world champions for the second time in their history after beating Argentina 1 - 0 in Sunday's FIFA World Cup 2026 final in Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Although Spain dominated the game from start to finish, they had to wait until the 106th minute to finally find a way past Emiliano Martinez. The Argentina goalkeeper made a series of saves to thwart Spain but had no chance when Nico Williams nodded down a Pedro Porro cross at the far post and Ferran Torres buried a first-time shot into the roof of the net. Of course, Argentina tried all it could to equalise after conceding that goal in extra time but then it was late as it's players could do nothing to make a comeback. It was a sad day for football's biggest superstar Lionel Messi as he was hoping to sign off his last world cup in style by giving Argentina a perfect win after inspiring his team in this world cup as well and gifting his country two back-to-back World Cups to emulate Brazil.
