The timing could not be more appropriate for the double-engine government to promote solar power in Goa. The Goa Government has recently notified the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Promotion Scheme, which will work alongside the Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. It is now time to make solar electricity accessible to eligible Goans by facilitating direct loans through banks. Consumers could repay the loan in instalments while receiving the subsidy through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). These initiatives can significantly reduce the financial burden on households and offer eligible consumers up to 300 units of free electricity per month. However, the upfront cost of installing rooftop solar systems remains a major hurdle, as many households may not have sufficient funds.
Easy access to bank loans would encourage more consumers to install solar systems and benefit from the available subsidies. It could also help address concerns over smart meters, as consumers would have an opportunity to reduce their electricity bills through solar generation. The combined Central Financial Assistance (CFA) and Goa Government subsidy can substantially reduce the out-of-pocket cost for consumers. This is a significant advantage that Goa should make the most of.
