Pandemic fatigue: A word of caution

DR PARESH LINGADKAR, Mayem | OCTOBER 22, 2020, 11:19 PM IST

The world is bracing for the second wave of the pandemic Covid-19. The Wuhan virus is set to enter into its ninth month in India. But nowhere there is sign on getting the pandemic over.

In fact the world is heading towards the second wave with Pandemic Fatigue. Pandemic Fatigue means people being tired of catastrophe. It means people are lowering their defenses because they are tired of

being careful. They believe that life must go on, how long you can hold something back.

The lockdowns are lifted now, people have started stepping out, they returned to office, back to mall, gyms, temples, restaurants, cinema halls. We have been told to live with the virus, the new normal.

There are people stepping out without masks, not maintaining social distancing. This could be even more dangerous.

The bottom line is that the pandemic is not ending anytime soon for three reasons. One, opening up, the moment the restrictions lifted, the cases spiked in India. Second, no herd immunity and third no vaccine even after so many months.

This means this virus is not going away in a hurry so keep your masks on, maintain social distancing, don’t let your guard down. Pandemic fatigue can be fatal.
