Saraya Art Space will be presenting a first-of-its-kind poetry residency designed only for poets, ‘The Poetry Retreat’ 2019 with Rochelle D’Silva and team beginning from July 31 to August 4 at Saraya Eco Stay at Sangolda in North Goa. The poets will be housed in beautiful bamboo tree houses and allowed to be one with nature in the lush green surroundings.
The residency is open to eight poets from around India. Poets in varying stages of their poetry journey will be instructed on how to write, publish and perform poetry. There would be five additional spots reserved for Goa-based poets, too. Poets will have access to one-on-one mentoring as well as group lectures and discussions. There would be four mentors guiding the poets through the different techniques of writing and performing poetry. The facilitators are Mustansir Dalvi, Rea Burman, Manohar Shetty and Rochelle D’silva.
Goa-based poet Manohar Shetty has eight books of poems to his credit and is considered one of the prominent Indian poets writing in the English language.
Rochelle D’silva is a spoken word artist from Goa. She has been performing since 2011.
Rea Burman is a writer, a performing artist and a fashion designer. Her workshops focus on the positive feedback model and are aimed at increasing self-awareness.
Mustansir Dalvi is an Anglophone poet, translator and editor. He has two books of poems in English, brouhahas of cocks (Poetrywala, 2013) and Cosmopolitician (Poetrywala, 2018). Mustansir Dalvi’s 2012 English translation of Muhammad Iqbal’s influential Shikwa and Jawaab-e-Shikwa from the Urdu as Taking Issue and Allah’s Answer (Penguin Classics) has been described as ‘insolent and heretical’ and makes Iqbal’s verse accessible to the modern reader.
Mustansir Dalvi has translated the poems of Hemant Divate from the Marathi in struggles with imagined gods published by Poetrywala in 2014/2019. He is the editor of Man without a Navel a collection of new and selected translations of Hemant Divate’s poems from the Marathi (2018, Poetrywala).
