An artistic tribute to women’s calibre

TGLife

To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, five international artists have come together to celebrate Women’s Work, curated by Samira Sheth and Sonny Singh at The Cube gallery in Moira. The art show focuses the works of creative women, the work that they do and how they do it “ challenging stereo types along the way. The show plays with the dismissive term ‘women’s work’ redefining and rebranding it triumphantly to cover the process and subject of artworks done by these international artists.

With her hands and the use of pliers and nippers, Georgian artist Keti works with the abrasive material of wire mesh to sculpt and mould the unusual material into figures that pay tribute to the power of women. Through the hard laborious process, she creates a 3D figure of the Rani of Jhansi carrying her child as she prepares to engage in battle while in another, a woman pulls a rickshaw carrying the world “ the artist’s tribute to women who have the power to turn the world around. In another collaborative and striking figure, Keti and artist-gallerist Sonny build a monumental ode to multi-tasking women everywhere, reflected through a multi-armed goddess figure.

In Georgian artist Nina Bajelidze’s intense Impressionist paintings, women play lead roles, either leading a herd of elephants or enjoying their own sense of freedom and agency. Acclaimed Russian artist Tatyana Antoshina (Tania) pays tribute to three figures of Indian history “ Rani Laxmibai, Sarojini Naidu and Vijaylakshmi Pandit through her large paintings on textile.

Using text and visual elements in her pen and ink drawings, French ceramist and illustrator Elodie Alexandre celebrates ten Indian women, each of them icons in their own fields ranging from Gaura Devi, Indian Chipko activist to Sarla Thakral, the first Indian woman to fly an aircraft!

Russian artist Mihail Pyatnickiy (popularly known as Paper Freak) is the only male artist in the show. He pays tribute to a mother and her child. He gives his unrestrained imagination free reign as he sculpts 3D figures of mother- child giraffes from thousands of paper polygons into a moving installation.
