Come end February and art lovers in Goa are in for veritable treat. Pune based art NGO, ‘Heart for Art’ (HFA) will be introducing Goa to the traditional Telangana folk art of Cherial scroll painting and mask making.
Hyderabad based Cherial artist, Saikiran Varma. Varma will be holding a series of three-hour training workshops across Goa from February 21 to 25. The first workshop will be held on February 23, 10 at Museum of Goa, Pilerne, followed by an evening workshop at Carpe Diem, Majorda. On February 24, workshops will be held at International Centre Goa, Panaji at 10 am and Saraya, Sangolda at 4 pm. The last workshop will be held on Feburary 25 at 4 pm at Dogears Bookshop, Margao.
The cherial mask making workshops in Goa will provide participants with a hands-on understanding of all the aspects of cherial masks.
Cherial scroll painting is a stylized version of Nakashi art, rich in the local motifs peculiar to Telangana. Cherial scroll painting made way to mask making where a few characters from the scrolls were converted into masks.
Varma studied Fine Arts from the Sri Venkateshwara College of Fine Arts, Madhapur and later chose to carry on with his family tradition of cherial scroll painting and mask Making. He has conducted multiple workshops across the country. According to Varma, the Cherial mask making is a 400-year-old traditional art form. “This art form has been passed on from one generation to the other. If I do not carry this forward, it will die,” Varma said.
