Saraya is organizing a dance recital of the Classical Tanjore School of Bharat Natyam performed by The Tanjore Quartet Dance Theatre on December 21. There will also be Costume D’Arte - modern styled Bharat Natyam costume installations designed by the artists themselves. This event will also mark the inauguration of the painting exhibition of the first part of ‘The Lotus Engine’ - a new collection by Godot, a Goa-based visual artist and painter. Young and talented artist Godot, Ishanou interprets his internal and external encounters with the world onto the canvas, telling stories through his paintings, sketches, digital canvases and prints. His art features scenes of love, the human form, personal tribulations and abstract settings.
Currently 23-year-old Godot, is a local Goan artist who began his passion in art at a young age. Born in Imphal, Manipur in 1991, Ishanou Rana Laifungbam (Godot) has been drawing and painting since early childhood. He grew up in the complex changing cultural environment of North Eastern India, spending some time in Delhi and some in Pondicherry and Goa. This array of cultures to which he was exposed very early fostered in him an appreciation in transience and stability; of the basic structural commonalities, synergies and interdependencies enabling and supporting the panoramic constant mutations of manifestation that expresses in the universe he experiences and to which he initiates the viewers of his work.
Some of his first drawings, of animals and trees, were used when Godot was about four years old, as the backdrop of a theatre production, ‘Pebbet’, a dance drama in the Manipuri tradition, performed by Anjika, a troupe of children. Others were used in the WHO publication ‘Hakshelkanglon’, an illustrated handbook for the care of people living with HIV/AIDS. He also illustrated his grandmother’s published memoirs, ‘Churachand Maharajgi Imung.’ Admitted into the National Institute of Design before he completed his 12th grade, he left after the first semester, preferring to pursue his investigation into art, the universe and everything, independently.
So far Godto has held five exhibitions of his work at Saraya (Sangolda), Gitanjali (Panaji), Vayu (Vagator) and Cube (Moira). He works with digital graphics, with pen and ink and water colour on paper, with pen on board and with acrylic on canvas. Apart from Saraya and Gitanjali, the artist has also done several murals at People Tree (Arpora) and St Thomas Boys’ High School (Aldona). His works are available for purchase at these places and also at Paper Boat, Sangolda and online.
