Dalgado Konknni Akademi, instituted for promoting Konkani in Roman script and named after Monsignor Sebastiao Rudolfo Dalgado, celebrated his 164th birthday on May 8 at Art and Culture multipurpose hall, Panaji. The day is celebrated annually in different parts of the state. Premanand A Lotlikar, ex-president, DKA was the chief guest. In his address, he called DKA to support the writers and to strengthen and preserve the Roman script.Also present were Tomazinho Cardozo, president DKA, Vincy Quadros, secretary DKA, Celso Fernandes, treasurer DKA, Fr Luis Xavier Gomes and the two writers, Cirilo D Fernandes and Joyce de Souza.
A special talk was arranged to convey to the people the importance of Dalgado Day and the works done by Monsignor Dalgado. Fr Luis Xavier Gomes, professor at St Xavier College,Mapusa and Konkani writer delivered the talk ‘Monsignor Sebastiao Rudolfo Dalgado and Konkani’.
In his address, Fr Gomes stated that Monsignor Dalgado was born on May 8 and gave an in-depth information about his work in the field of Konkani literature. He further added that through his hardwork, Monsignor Dalgado proved that Konkani was an independent language. He lamented that his contribution to the language seems to have been forgotten in the recent years and appreciated that DKA celebrated this day to ensure his memories and works are made known to the future generations of Goa.
On this occasion, DKA released two books written by famous Konkani poet, Cirilo D Fernandes ‘Conductor Pil’luk Mar’ a book of poems and ‘Mhojea Bannavlechim AdlimKazaram’ and a book on short stories ‘Nateancho Sonvsar’ by Joyce de Souza.
Tomazinho Cardozo, DKA president congratulated the writers and encouraged them to continue writing and enhance the quality of Konkani literature in Roman script.
Both the writers, Cirilo D Fernandes and Joyce de Souza spoke on their writings and expressed their gratitude to DKA and others who helped them. Willy Goes and Vassalo Carvalho gave an insight on the books. While Vincy Quadros, welcomed the gathering, Celso Fernandes, DKA treasurer proposed a vote of thanks. Sonia Gomes, member of DKA working committee compered the function.
