When we interact with blind people or indeed disabled people in general there is a tendency to pity them and to treat them as helpless beings. Yet despite having one less primary sense than the rest of us, blind people have an astonishing ability to use their remaining four senses much more vividly than the rest of us to make up for it, with skills that are admirable. They are not to be underestimated. And that is exactly what Kaabil sets out to prove and does a pretty remarkable job at it.
Rohan Bhatnagar (Hrithik Roshan), a visually impaired guy who works as a mime artist falls for Supriya (Yami Gautam) who is also visually impaired. As the couple settles into marital bliss, Supriya's beauty attracts the eye of local goon Amit Shellar (Rohit Roy), and brother of powerful politician Madhavrao Shellar (Ronit Roy), who together with his pal takes advantage of Rohan's absence from the house, barges in and rapes Supriya. When the police come onto the scene, the shell shocked couple are told to send her for a medical examination at once before 24 hours are up. However, on the way to the hospital, the couple are kidnapped and imprisoned in a remote place before being set free after a day. With Supriya being blind and her first hand account of the crime thus not being good enough to nab the culprits and no solid medical evidence to back them up, the police dismiss the case, leaving the couple helpless.
Two days later, as the couple are still trying to adjust to life after the heinous crime, Rohan comes home to find Supriya hanging from the ceiling fan. Having lost faith with the police, a distraught Rohan decides to take matters into his own hands and avenge his wife's death.
At this point the film does take the old school revenge angle which may not have been the best choice. Yet watching how despite his handicap, Rohan goes about outsmarting everybody is quite an enjoyable game. Watch out for the especially clever climax.
It's been awhile since we've seen some truly spectacular acting from Hrithik Roshan. His last outings like Mohenjo Daro and Bang Bang were utter duds. But with Kaabil, Hrithik is back and how. Yami Gautam does support him well, but the film truly belongs to Hrithik. A special mention however must be made for the duo dancing to Mon Amour.
