Security lapses at the Central Jail in Colvale were exposed yet again when eight mobile phones, imported tobacco and ganja were seized from the jail on Saturday afternoon.

Officials from the prison administration and the Crime Branch of Goa Police conducted a search after the prison administration received information that mobile phones were being used by prisoners in the prison.

The officials searched the prison and found prohibited items in the undertrial and convict sections of the jail. The items confiscated included eight mobile phones, two grams of ganja, and five packets of imported tobacco. The value of the seized imported tobacco is Rs 60,000, while the seized ganja was valued at Rs 2,000.

The Crime Branch police are conducting further investigation in this case.

In the wake of an increase in the smuggling of drugs in Colvale Jail, the prison administration had abruptly transferred 81 IRB armed policemen deployed for the security of the prison in July 2024. In addition, authorities had banned outside food from being provided to the prisoners.

Despite these measures, prohibited goods are still being smuggled into the prison.
