The new IORT treatment for cancer will certainly raise hopes for many cancer-afflicted in the world. This way, continuous sessions of radiotherapy can be avoided. The reason for the success of this new form of treatment is that is only targets high recurrence cancerous cells via TARGIT, or TARGeted Intraoperative Radiotherapy.
This concept was incidentally designed by a Goan-born professor Jayant Vaidya, who is a professor of surgery and oncology at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Vaidya now says that cancer is not a taboo anymore. He would be right. If the treatment works the way it’s meant to work, then there will be a large increase in cancer cells eliminated in a patient’s body, as opposed to one who was treated via radiation. There is even a lesser chance of recurrence with this treatment.
Cancer is getting more widespread in India over the past decade or so. Many countries in the world have been suffering from widespread cancer for much longer. Many attribute this to the changing lifestyles, the dependence on chemicals in foods, etc. The increase in sedentary lifestyle and intake of tobacco and alcohol also contributes to this. Perhaps this treatment can also work to nip cancer in the bud. The major task now is early detection.
