Goa College of Music wins Rotaract Club of Ponda's ‘Ghumat Utsav'

The event was filled with music that was a blend of the sounds of traditional percussion instsruments and vocalists present. The ninth edition of Ghumat Utsav was successful with participation of 23 groups, comprising 230 youths including girl students, participated from higher secondary's and colleges across Goa.
According to the organisers the participation is increasing every year compared to last events. The competition was inaugurated at the hands of well-known builder Sandeep Niglye, while the chairman of Ravindra Bhavan-Margao Prashant Naik was present for the concluding.
Niglye while addressing the youngsters, who are trying to resurrect the Goan folk, said that he was very happy to see such zeal in them. "At the time when the doubts are raised that our art forms may extinct, at the same time you all are proving those doubts wrong," he said.
Prashant Naik also spoke similarly and said that he felt happy to see the ‘ghumat' in the hands of youngsters. "since my childhood I am attached to playing of ghumat. But in recent times I had apprehension that this form may fade away. But no, it's sound will be echoed in future too," he said.
DM's PVS Higher Secondary-Assgao and S.S Dempo College-Bambholim, won second and third prize respectively.
The government College of Arts and Science-Khandola, DMC College-Assgao, Goa Engineering College-Farmagudi and Saraswat Vidyalay Sridora Caculo College-Mapusa were honoured with consolation prizes.
Nikjhil Yellukar and Saurabh Kerkar were awarded as best Ghumat players, while best ‘shamel' player was given to Manthan Naik, best ‘Kassale' player was given to Sunny Naik, best singer (male) Omkar Gaonkar and best singer (female) was awarded to Gayatri Patil.
Narayan Zantye College of Commerce was awarded best ‘gajar' group.
Sooraj Pinge and Vishnudas Bhingi did the judging of this event.
