Hindustani music on saxaphone



Ragas on Saxophone , a unique Hindustani classical performance featuring USA saxophonist Phil Scarff and tabla wizard Mayank Bedekar will be held on February 11, 6 pm at the Goa Chakra Museum, Benaulim. 

 The concert will include bada khyal, chhota khyal, and gat in evening ragas, a lighter piece such as a dhun or bhajan, and a short jazz composition. 

 Phil Scarff celebrates the release of his CD, “Ragas on Saxophone,” recorded live at the Hirai Music Festival, Chandrapur, India. The CD also features Mumbai-based tabla maestro, Bhushan Parchure.

 Phil received extensive training Hindustani music in Pune from vocalist Pt. Shreeram Devasthali, leading sundri artist Pt. Suryakant Khaladkar, and shehnai master Pt. Shyamrao Lonkar. Phil is a master jazz saxophonist, and leads the acclaimed world-jazz ensemble, Natraj, and the Lewis Porter-Phil Scarff Group. He has delighted audiences in India, Africa, the US, and Canada. Scarff is Phil is featured on over 35 acclaimed CDs/DVDs, and was named Best Instrumentalist in Foundations TV Red Carpet Awards (USA). He has performed with icons of Indian classical music, including Ronu Majumdar, Shashank, Kadri Gopalnath, Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Trichy Sankaran, and Chitravina Ravikiran. 

 Tabla wizard Mayank Bedekar has enthralled listeners all over India, as well as in the US, Europe, and Thailand. He is an empanelled artist of ICCR and A grade artist of All India Radio. He has earned awards including Pandit V. D. Paluskar Award, Master Ramnarayan Jeena Purskar, and Pandit Nikhil Ghosh Memorial Award. His gurus include Padmashree ‘Taal-Yogi’ Pt. Suresh Talwalkar. Last date for registration is February 9.

The fifth edition of Yuva Jagruti was organised recently by Abhivyaktee  at Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji. The event was inaugurated by scientist Dr Vinod Dhargalkar in the presence of Gorakh Mandrekar and Geeta Mangueshkar and witnessed participation of 520 students in four contests “ poster making, non-film patriotic singing, extempore speech and street play. All the prizes were sponsored by Goa State Bio Diversity Board.
