I’m a media professional in my 40s and I’m pained by the younger generation who think that posting pics on Instagram and on their blogs makes them writers and professionals. I was approached by a girl who takes pics of her food and calls herself a food specialist, and she wanted a high profile job working for me. What is going on with the world?
Sid
Hey Sid, you sir are like me, an old fart. We are in our 40s but we might as well be admitting ourselves into an old age home because things are getting away from us. I ran into someone the other day who shoots music on his phone, uploads them to YouTube and says that this is his gateway into music documentaries. This is how they think. In fact, most of #TGLife’s readers are boys and girls like that. It’s the way the world works nowadays and we have to deal with it. Look at it this way, over a decade ago, someone saw a young boy singing a song on YouTube. He then took him on as an artist, promoted him and that young boy became a star. His name is Justin Beiber. Chew on that for a minute or twenty. I bet if we had YouTube back when I was a young fellow, I would have been a star by now, a few books on the New York Times bestsellers list with most of them optioned for movies and a bombshell on my arm. But today, I’m stuck here in my boxers and vest, writing an advice column with the only thing on my arm being same scabs for when I scratched myself trying to pick up the feni bottle that fell down from my arm chair. It was plastic in case you’re wondering. Live with this new age Sid. Grow old gracefully and embrace social media the way I have. I’m the guy documenting life in Goa, one feni at a time.

This boy I work with keeps on pestering me to go out with him, but I don’t see him that way. He’s just a friend and not my type. Why can’t we be friends?
Giselle
Well Giselle, for many boys today, women are either sisters or lovers. They don’t know about that space called a platonic relationship. The blame lies with society and with parents, but mostly with society as a whole. They spoil everything, I had to stop wearing bellbottoms because “society’ thought that it was a dead fad. Idiots! So anyway, what you need to do is talk to this fellow at work, make him realise that you are better as friends and that it doesn’t bode well to have a relationship at work. My grandmother used to say “Babu, don’t poop where you eat.” I assume she was talking about my then girlfriend who was also my boss. That didn’t work out. See, you can use that story. I’ll be the uncle in your story, the drunken fool who always makes mistakes, like have a relationship with his boss, gets fired and then has to leave Dubai and come back to India. No, that is not really my story but let’s pretend it is okay? It actually happened to a friend. Yes, we both had relationships with our bosses, it’s a weird coincidence. Talk to this boy, it should help. If he doesn’t listen, I’ll come over and have a word with him. I can also be Bully Uncle for a change. My wife says I’m a scaredy cat but she doesn’t know me that well.

I like these hacker groups who are creating havoc online, and are now hacking politicians twitter accounts. How do I become a hacker? I don’t have any experience but I have seen Mr Robot many times already.
Data boy!
I see you’ve opted for Data Boy with an exclamation mark as your handle. Interesting! (No that’s not my handle). There are pros and cons to that name but let’ move on from it for now. Watching Mr Robot does not qualify you as a hacker, no matter how awesome, brilliant and well thought out the series is. The whole writing is great, isn’t it? Anyway, back to the dark side of the internet. This is not the Matrix or anything else you’ve seen. Have you even been on to the dark web? It’s a murky place that can get you into a lot of trouble. I knew a hacker once, but even he just dipped his toe into the pool and then decided it wasn’t a good idea to swim. Be careful what you wish for.
