Absence of sanitation amenities at the Cutbona fishing jetty took the centre stage at the meeting of the South District Consumer Protection Council meeting held at the district Collectorate on Thursday as a representative of the Fisheries department tried to reassure agitated members that the department has taken a decision to outsource mobile toilets to the Tourism department.
The district Council meeting chaired by Additional Collector, South Surendra Naik and member secretary Eshant Sawant also discussed a host of issues, relating to electricity, health services, transport, legal metrology as members of the Council raised a host of queries on the functioning of these departments.
Consumer activists raised the question of the absence of the poor sanitation facilities at the Cutbona jetty. When a representative of the Fisheries department sought to point out that the department has decided to outsource mobile toilets to the Tourism department, members demanded to know that what they are looking at the jetty is the sanitation amenities and not which department will set up the facility.
The members further pointed out that the Department of Fisheries has been dragging its feet to set up the toilet block at the Cutbona jetty when the jetty is the home for around 4,000-plus migrant labourers.
The issue over the delay in setting up the sale counter of the Printing Press also figured at the meeting. A representative of the Printing Press pointed out that though the department has been provided with a stall in the district Collectorate, lack of furnishing has delayed in the opening of the sale counter. Members demanded that the government should open the stall by December 19.
Incidentally, Member Secretary of the District Consumer Protection Council Eshant Sawant assured the members that the Council will seek action taken reports from the departments. It was pointed out that the Council will put the systems in place to address the grievances.
