Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Bhavna Nanoskar was ousted in a no-confidence motion, after 13
councillors voted against her in the 25-member council at a special meeting on Friday.
Twenty councillors participated at the special meeting, convened to decide the fate of Nanoskar, the
49th chairperson of MMC, which was presided over by Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Siddhivinayak Naik.
At the meeting, it was instructed that councillors voting against Nanoskar could stand and raise hands, while councillors voting for Nanoskar could sit.
Thirteen councillors stood up to support the motion, indicating an end to the tenure of the MMC chairperson. Seven councillors supported Nanoskar.
Later speaking to the media, Nanoskar said despite knowing that the no-confidence motion was signed by 13 councillors, she still decided to come to the meeting.
“Had I not come to the meeting, it would appear that allegations made by councillors against me were true,” said Nanoskar.
“I have undertaken a lot of works in these two months. I have been accused of
not taking councillors into confidence and I maintain that I cannot support
illegalities.”
“I want the vigilance department to conduct an enquiry into the works taken by me in the last two months, so that people are clear on who is clean and who is into illegalities.”
“I also want the ACB to probe all details and activities in the MMC during the last two months,” said the ousted chairperson.
