A 23-year old medical student was gang raped inside themoving bus, beaten and thrown off the vehicle along with a male friend, nearMahipalpur, in south Delhi on night of December 16. The girl is struggling forher life and is on full ventilator support.

The incident took place when the woman and her friend werereturning home after watching a movie in Saket. After the show, the couplehired an auto rickshaw for Munirka in south Delhi and later boarded a whitelineprivate bus, destined for Dwarka. They were few passengers in the bus, but thecouple was not aware that those were friends of the driver and all under theinfluence of alcohol.

After around 10 minutes, five of the seven men startedmisbehaving with the girl. And when the boy objected, it led to a fight. Whilethe boy was badly beaten with iron rod, the men took turns to rape the woman. After an hour of torture, the couple was stripped and dumped from the movingbus near Mahipalpur flyover.

The woman, who completed her studies from Dehradun, wasinterning at a city hospital and her friend is an engineer and works for aprivate firm.

A passerby spotted the two on the road and called thepolice. They were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for medical help. While theboy was discharged after treatment, the girl was shifted to Safdarjung Hospitaland was immediately operated upon.

After being assaulted with a blunt object, the girl sufferedhead injuries apart from injuries to the abdominal region. Parts of herintestine had to be removed to avoid spread of infection to other body parts. She was put on ventilator support.

The doctors at the Safdarjung Hospital performed a secondsurgery on Wednesday. The biggest challenge faced by doctors is septicemia --an infection which is usually caused by bacteria of various types contaminatinga person’s blood. It could lead to life-threatening infections.

Doctors treating the girl say that they have never seen suchbrutality on a sex crime victim. Her blood pressure and platelet levels remainunstable and she remains critical.

A case of kidnapping, rape, robbery and assault againstunidentified miscreants has been registered at Vasant Vihar police station.

It took less than 24 hours for Delhi police to track downthe main accused. There were seven people in the bus. Five people have beencaught, while two are still absconding.

The police studied CCTV footage from highway cameras toidentify the bus. Footage showed the bus, which had "Yadav" writtenon its side, drive past a camera at about 9 pm.
