One of the many things that Goa is famed for is it's deep love for and natural talent for music. In fact it is not uncommon to find atleast one individual in every family who is involved in music or has a fair knowledge of music. With the aim of giving a bigger platform for Goans to showcase this talent, The Pilar Music Academy (Pilar Fathers) has decided to organise the first edition of "Nightingale of Goa 2017" an all Goa original Konkani Solo Singing Competition.
The Pilar Fathers began opening music schools in Goa in 1978. The original name of the Pilar Music Academy was Shubh Sandesh Sangeet Academy, which was later changed to Pilar Music Academy as it was found appropriate in the line of the operetta shows which were planned in Goa.
The main objectives of the Academy are to impart the message of the gospel in the programs organized. It also strives to promote standard cultural concerts and operettas having good social and ethical message.
Over the years the academy has staged several operettas and has ventured into opening music schools at Pilar, Porvorim, Margao, Sanvordem, Sanguem, Valpoi, Agonda, Moira and Salvador-do-Mundo. Thousands of students are learning this fine art of music through these schools and are transforming their lives through music. The aim of these music schools is not only to prepare musicians. Through the schools, the academy is also on a mission of imbibing in the students the rich cultural values, thus keeping on the dialogue between gospel and culture.
In order to provide a platform for the Goan singers, promote love for the language of Konkani and to bring more original songs on the stage with new lyrics and melody, the academy under its Director Fr.Peter Cardoso sfx, planned the Nightingale of Goa 2017. The other members on the team of Pilar Fathers who worked to make this event a reality were Fr.Mark Furtado, Fr.Myron Siqueira, Fr.Roncy Braganza Fr. Noel Menezes and Fr. Joe Rodriques.
As part of the competitions, auditions were held at four different centre's i.e Sanguem, Pilar, Penha de France and Margao. The competition has been divided into fourcategories i.e. juniors (8to 12yrs) teenagers (13 to 19yrs) youth (20 to 29) and seniors (30 and above).
Over 150 participated in the auditions and sung new original songs with 32 finally making their way into the semifinals which will be held on October 22, 10:30 am onwards at Ravindra Bhavan Hall at Curchorem. Of these, 24 of the best participants will make it to the grand finals which is scheduled on October 29, 3.30pm at Ravindra Bhavan Hall, Margao. Noted fadista Sonia Shirsat and mimicry artist Manohar Bingi too will perform on the occasion.
