2016 is coming to an end. But what are the next big trends we'll see in 2017? Well, fret not, because no matter what the new year brings, here are some brilliant (and ageless) tips if you’re looking to make your home a little more lovely and cozy than it no doubt already is.

For someone who doesn’t think twice about repainting a room, a quick coat of paint will do wonders to transition a room into a new year. The style it dark has proved very popular by stylists across the globe. Darker pieces of furniture, side tables, coffee tables, cabinets or consoles. Else, simply swap your white walls for dark, and create a gorgeously moody-yet-luxe vibe in your home. Think deep dark chocolate, right through to pale camels and tans. But no beige.

Immersed in technology from day to night, people are looking to surround themselves with objects that ground a space and bring them back to nature, reviving a sense of balance to their lives.

Indoor plants, whether faux or real; succulents or cheese, are a huge deal on Instagram right now. For plant styling perfection, visit the verdant feeds belonging to @deecampling, @ehd_loves and @thejungalow, or try the tag #greenupyourgaff.

Yes, bringing the outdoors in is nothing new, but now think cool blues, greens, greys and pearl whites. Minerals like agate and marble and reflective surfaces such as glass, mirror and gold will add to the sparkle.

If you’re more of a contemporary enthusiast, then this is the theme for you. The use of reflective surfaces with materials like coloured glass, pearl and mirror incorporated into furniture and accessories alongside warm metals like gold and brass is timeless. Use these materials used in different ways with transparent or iridescent effects to take advantage of the natural light and bounce it around a space. And think rich materials such as velvets, satins, and silks, alongside woolen felt, concrete, and flannel.

A few seasons ago, decor was all about making bold statements with bright color, but now the role of color has changed. Brights will feature in smaller quantities, mainly via accessories or a colored chair or sofa, with softer and less aggressive color for the rest. Art is an important source of inspiration. Colorful textiles and wallpaper are also popular.

Try using some artful geometry, and painterly effects such as blending watercolors or color gradients. Keep everything light and airy.

Super-stylist @em_henderson always advocates the ‘rule of three’ when it comes to styling home decor. Peruse her profile with beautiful vignettes of her own home, which demonstrates how to put her rules into practice.

Yep, cork is making a comeback. Not only is cork a stylish material idea that adds warmth and texture to spaces, it’s also ideal for absorbing noise in our increasingly large, open plan homes. Whether as a base for the coffee table or in combination with stone tops, as a solid cork stool or a pretty side table, cork is going to be everywhere.

In fact, some predict that cork could be used to clad entire walls in the home office and used to pin notes to.

Beds will change dramatically in 2017, with upholstered bed heads set to replace the timber bed frames currently dominating the market. They’ve been a staple in luxury hotel bedrooms and celebrity homes for a while, so whether you opt for the classic model in neutral colour with buttons, or a plush one in velvet, a bedhead is an easy way to update and add instant glamour to a bedroom.

Warm materials such as terracotta tiles will replace currently popular cool and white tones. Unlike in the 80s, they aren’t used as border tiles. Instead they will have a natural matte finish and be used as feature walls in bathrooms, etc, hallways, etc.

Cheeky Chinese artist critiques society with nudity

Setting up a camera in a public place, Ou Zhihang hastily removes his clothes, then with just one bottom-exposing press-up -- his work is done. The artist has taken more than 700 photos capturing his nude exercises on streets in China and sometimes abroad “ a body of work unmatched in the contemporary art world. But the locations he chooses “ sites of government abuses, protests and disaster “ show there is more to his work than just cheek. "My aim isn't to get people to…
