Ravindra Bhavan, Margao and members of the tiatr fraternity have expressed reservations over the government reserving the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao for various government sponsored events for as many 30-35 days in the next two months, raising fears that the auditorium may not be available for the staging tiatrs. In the light of this issue, TG Life spoke to a number of Tiatrists to understand what efforts can be made to resolve the issue. Today, in the era of OTT platforms and other mediums of entertainment, Tiatr are still doing good business, say veteran Tiatrists, but cite that a number of issues remain unresolved. One of the key issues is that there are not enough venues to stage the plays. Tiatrists also stated that the popularity of this genre needs to spread around Goa and not remain concentrated in certain areas of the state.
Nowhere to go for Tiatr
There is hardly any alternative before Tiatrists if Ravindra Bhavan is unavailable. Tha Kala Academy is closed too. In such a situation, the government should support Tiatrists by giving us halls and other facilities to perform. I would suggest that Tiatr competitions could be held in locations such as Ponda, Sanquelim etc, so that the popularity of Tiatr spreads in these areas too. Currently, Margao and Panaji are major centres of Tiatr.

Ravindra Bhavan is very important venue for Tiatr today. The government too earns good revenues from Taitr, but there have been instances when Ravindra Bhavan is booked at short notice by the government, and tiatrs have to be rescheduled. There could be dedicated facilities exclusively for staging Tiatr. Fortunately, the management of Ravindra Bhavan has been very supportive.

The government should provide an alternative arrangement for Taitrists when Ravindra Bhavan cannot be used. Some of the other venues in Margao are too small, so much so that even if the venue is houseful.

After certain competitions were shifted from Kala Academy in Panaji to Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, we are indeed facing some difficulty in procuring a venue for Tiatr shows. We have spoken to the minister for art and culture, and he has assured us that space will be given at Ravindra Bhavan margao on weekends. We hope such arrangements are made. The government shift competitions to venues in Sanquelim or Vasco. Margao has been a major centre for Tiatr over the years, and weekends are especially important for the business. Secondly, I would urge the government to give subsidy on hall bookings

Ravindra Bhavan Margao is already under a lot of pressure as it hosts a number of social gatherings and other programmes. It is the need of the hour that some halls be kept reserved exclusively for staging Tiatr, because Salcete is the Mecca of Tiatr.When there are plans of repair and renovations to Ravindra Bhavan, the government should take Tiatr performances into consideration and make alternative arrangements.

Ravindra Bhavan is currently unavailable for staging Tiatr, and it is difficult to find a venue that can do justice to budget and audience of Tiatr in Margao. Considering that the government competitions attract relatively low crowd, it could have booked any other venue Our shows are currently going on in villages around Goa.
