Architects, home designers and the like would be interested in this talk at the Design Centre in Porvorim titled 'Inhabiting Interior Seas' by Arijit Chatterjee and Asha Sumra on April 9 at 6.30 p.m. It is a discussion on how interventions establish a fluid relationship between communities, land and water, and the shifting spaces in-between.

With increasing pressure for productive land use, there is a movement towards occupying the waters to live, move and feed our communities. This initiative is not new. From the interior seas of Patagonia, to the Ganges Delta, such practices have persisted from the time of sea nomads, and developed similar to sedentary space on land. By sharing examples of work and experiences in Bangladesh, Chile and India Arijit and Asha explore how ideas of ecology and community could lead to healthy and joyful inhabitation of the shifting spaces of the water, and its edges.

In the spring of 2013 Arijit Chatterjee and Asha Sumra took up the challenge of crossing the length of the Amazon by water and dense rainforest to return back to Valparaiso, Chile via Bolivia where they were enrolled as Masters students in Nautical and Maritime Architecture. The particularity of this journey encompasses both these individuals continued search to formulate a holistic understanding of their expertise as architectural designers with a sound understanding of human settlement and ecology in and around water.

Their skill set ranges across Architectural and Maritime & Nautical Design to particularly include the design of Architecture, Boats, Floating Structures, Water-Based Community Infrastructure and Marine Cultivation Systems. With significant overlap between practice and research, they have also carried out investigation into Historic Water Structures on the Indian Subcontinent; Techniques of Wooden Boatbuilding and The Sinking Mosques of Bengal.

The talk is open to all.
