Dr Anand Teltumbde will be delivering a talk on the topic ‘India’s Democratic Deficit’, this Sunday at Museum of Goa on April 28 from 11:30 am “ 12:30 pm.
By the virtue of her size, diversity and demographic characteristics, India is eulogized as the biggest democracy in the world. Indeed, a few countries could rival in terms of its democratic exterior. However, the content of this democracy has been problematic right from the beginning she embarked on her tryst with destiny. Today, she has reached a point where this epithet itself is becoming increasingly questionable.
Dr. Teltumbde would try to examine the fundamentals, the construction of the post-colonial state, and show that much of its deficit we experience today is attributable to the deliberate intrigues of the class that inherited power from the colonial rulers. He will test out salient accomplishment of this state with the conceptual content of democracy as envisaged by its founding fathers. The speaker will also propose certain basic remedies to do away this deficit and get India onto tracks of reasonable democracy.
Anand Teltumbde is a writer and civil rights activist with CPDR, Maharashtra. An alumnus of IIM, Ahmedabad, had a long stint in corporate world that ended with being a CEO of Petronet India.
A noted scholar in his professional field, he had a parallel career as a public intellectual. He has written 26 books so far, innumerable articles and numerous speeches that exposed public policy ills. He writes a insightful column in EPW. Anand is presently a senior professor and chair, Big Data Analytics at Goa Institute of Management.
