The countdown to one of the most prestigious awards continues and the nominations for the Oscars 2017 which is all set to take place on February 26 are out. As expected La La Land which has been an award favorite ever since it hit the screens dominated the list. However the list also saw mentions from quite a few other films which have also been getting their fair share of recognition all around. Quite a few in fact were also on the list for the recent Golden Globe awards held earlier this month.
Arrival and Moonlight picked up eight nominations each, although fans were quite puzzled over the fact that the lead actress of Arrival, Amy Adams missed out on an acting nod. “8 nominations for Arrival but no nomination for the actor who leads the entire film. Bizarre,” tweeted one upset fan, a sentiment which was echoed by many fans on the social media site.
Hacksaw Ridge on the other hand scored six nominations along with Lion and Manchester by the Sea. Joining all these films in the Best Picture category were Fences, Hell or High Water and Hidden Figures.
Meryl Streep breaks record
Iconic actress Meryl Streep picked up her record-breaking 20th nomination for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins and actress was quite speechless over the news. Her publicist sent out a GIF of the actress dancing in Paul McCartney's Queenie Eye video as a reaction to her latest Oscar nod. Also making the list for Best Actress were Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), Natalie Portman (Jackie) and Emma Stone (La La Land).
The return of Mel Gibson
On the other hand, director Mel Gibson celebrated her first Oscar nomination ( for Hacksaw Ridge) since Braveheart which came out 21 years ago along with his newborn son. The other nominations on the list are Denis Villeneuve ( Arrival), Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester By The Sea), Barry Junkins (Moonlight) and of course Damien Chazelle.

Guests at the Oscars however may need to be careful around Andrew Garfield who is nominated for Best Actor for Hacksaw Ridge as he has joked that he is totally up for some more same sex kissing is he is attracted to the person next to him. The actor made news after he and Reynolds shared a surprise lip lock after they lost to Ryan Gosling at the recent Golden Globes. Ofcourse Garfield will be competing against Ryan Gosling again for Best Actor along with Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Denzel Washington (Fences)

Viola Davis, Naomie Harris, and Octavia Spencer have made Oscars history by becoming the first three black stars to be nominated together in a single category. All three are up for Best Supporting Actress for their roles in Fences, Moonlight, and Hidden Figures - the first time three black performers have held a majority in any Academy Awards category. Dev Patel makes India proud
Indian origin actor Dev Patel became only the third Indian actor to be nominated for an Oscar after he received a nod for her performance in Lion. He joins the company of anglo Indian Ben Kingsley who won for Gandhi in 1982 and secured three other nominations over the years, and Merle Oberon, an anglo Indian actress who got a nod way back in 1935. Dev will be competing against Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea) and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals).

For some reason some people argue that it was one of the worst song of 2016, but looks like the Academy doesn not agree with them. Justin Timberlake scored his maiden Oscar nomination for the peppy tune Can't Stop This Feeling from the animated film Trolls which received a node for Best Original Song. Apart from his tune, 'Audition (The Fools Who Dream) and 'City Of Stars' (La La Land), 'The Empty Chair' (Jim: The James Foley Story) and 'How Far I'll Go' (Moana) also made the list.
