Why Goa loves US television series

There are really amazing television series on American TV and Netflix, which are now shown on Indian television too. Do the Emmy’s actually matter to viewers here, or do they just love the shows because they’re good?

The Emmy’s are over and apart from studios and a few other people in the business, do awards really determine whether a series is worth it or not? Would you not watch The Americans if it did not win any awards? The fourth season is due to come out soon and it wasn’t even nominated for the first two seasons, yet it’s one amazing series, comparable, in terms of content to many others out today. Series like Game of Thrones, House of Cards and perhaps even Mr Robot, have a following because they are really good series. Sure, GoT and HoC are dramas that are larger than life. GoT is a brilliant series, one that spans many kingdoms, has dragons and people cutting each other up. There is magic and witchcraft at play honestly. In HoC, one man takes on politicians and others, with his eye on the prize, the Oval Office. What he does to get there and then stay there is enthralling.

But even in the past, shows that haven’t won Emmys or won hardly any, have still been lauded as great series. Agents of Shield, or even Daredevil, for instance, are great shows. Gotham is a reimagining of life in the city of Gotham before Batman arrives and when Jim Gordon is but a regular cop. The creativity is tremendous. Perhaps it’s not just about the awards but more about the content. After all, that’s what should matter right?

For me the whole reason for watching House of Cards is Kevin Spacey and his portrayal of Frank Underwood. The way he breaks the fourth wall during the show, by talking to the viewers, really gets you into the story and makes you feel like you are a part of his plan in whatever he does. He's cold and calculated and knows exactly what he wants and will do anything to get it. At some point you root for him to fail just so you can see how he stages a comeback and how he plots his revenge. That just hooks you in.

I really love the background music that every episode of Game of Thrones has. I’ve even bought most of the scores on iTunes, with my favourite being Fire and Ice. Every season of the show is unpredictable, especially for someone who hasn’t yet read the books. Just when you think that you’ve figured out the formula of the show, either there is a major plot twist or your favourite character is killed.

The story that NASA had issued a new zodiac appeared in Cosmopolitan’s UK edition recently, but it quickly spread, with Yahoo, AOL, and more all soon carrying stories claiming that NASA had issued a new zodiac chart that added a 13th sign called Ophiuchus and shifted around dates for the other twelve signs. On twitter and facebook,…
