CM fast-tracks recognition to 1583 Cuncolim Revolt

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | JULY 02, 2022, 12:57 AM IST

Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant seems leaving no stone unturned to accord due recognition for the historic 1583 Cuncolim Revolt. After the decision to commemorate July 15 as National War Memorial Day, the Chieftain’s Memorial Day on July 15, will now be celebrated in Cuncolim with a Guard of Honour. Pramodbab, sources say, has now vowed to recognise the slain Cuncolim Chieftains as State Martyrs and get the Cuncolim revolt in the school curriculum as well. What was initiated by the late Dr Verissimo Coutinho two decades ago is finally getting recognition. Cuncolkars in general and the Desai’s in particular must be certainly pleased with Pramodbab’s gesture. Any questions?

All eyes on Cong observers ahead of session

Are any of the Congress observers, including Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao arriving in the State ahead of the monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly to ensure coordination amongst the 11 party MLAs? This question is doing the rounds in Congress circles, with party leaders wondering whether the 11 MLAs are working in tandem in a bid to floor the government on the floor of the House or working at cross purposes. A Congress leader only hoped the Congress leadership draft Dinesh Rao or some other leader to Goa ahead of the Assembly session. Any questions?

BJP councillor at Vijai’s event raises eyebrows

BJP leader Damubab Naik reportedly saw red when BJP-backed councillor Sadanand alias Packlo descended at Goemkar Ghor, the headquarters of Goa Forward party, on Sunday. Packlo made his presence felt at the Goemkar Ghor to attend the Sunday Dialogues programme hosted by Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai. Sources said Damubab and other BJP functionaries apparently took exception to Packlo’s presence at the Goemkar Ghor, fearing that it may send a wrong message to the party rank and file. Wait and watch whether the remaining BJP councillors would attend Vijaibab’s Sunday Dialogue on coming Sunday.

Digambar-Vijai ties on shaky grounds?

Margao MLA Diggu must be wondering why his Fatorda counterpart Vijaibab Sardesai has stopped answering his phone calls in the last few days. Common friends of the Diggu-Vijai duo are trying to find out whether Diggu made several calls to the Fatorda MLA and why Vijaibab preferred not to answer the calls. Political observers have been trying to find out whether relations between the duo have hit rock bottom and whether the row over the appointments of data entry operators have caused strain on the Margao Civic Alliance ruling the Margao Municipal Council. Wait and watch.

Clafacio is down, but not out

Congress-turned-BJP ex-MLA Clafaciobab Dias seems down, but not out after his defeat in the 2022 polls. Many in Cuncolim and outside might have expected Clafaciobab to quit politics after his defeat on the BJP banner, but the ex-MLA has been making his presence felt at almost every party function in the last two months. In fact, political observers are trying to figure out whether Clafaciobab has any plans up his sleeves in the ensuing panchayat polls given his strong presence in the villages. Wait and watch.
