When Tagore directed Goa Cong to take aggressive stand on Mhadei

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | JANUARY 28, 2023, 12:28 AM IST

Guess what’s newly-appointed Goa Congress desk in-charge, Manekan Tagore’s advice to the State Congress on the burning Mhadei issue? Well, if senior Congress leaders are to be believed, Tagore sounded categorical in pointing out that the Goa Congress should adopt an aggressive stand on the issue, irrespective of the stand of Karnataka unit. It’s, however, unclear whether Tagore has given the directive out of genuine interest in stopping Karnataka from diverting Mhadei or more out of fear that the opposition space is being encroached upon by like-minded political parties. Any questions.

All eyes on Vijai’s deadline and threat to govt over Mhadei

With just four days to go for the 15-day deadline set to the BJP government to get Centre revoke the DPR nod to Karnataka on Mhadei river or face Goa bandh, all eyes are focused on Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai how he would go about to execute his threat. While addressing the Save Mhadei, Save Goa front meeting in Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant’s fiefdom Sanquelim on Opinion Poll Day on January 16, Vijaibab had thundered that Goa would come to a halt if the BJP dare not withdraw the DPR within 15 days. Wait and watch as the Goa Forward chief has just returned from Jaipur.

Another innings in Lok Sabha? Sardinha holds meet with Tagore

South Goa MP Franciscobab Sardinha was one senior Congress leader, who was believed to have called on Goa desk in-charge Manekan Tagore during his visit to the State earlier this week. The meeting assumes significance with the Lok Sabha polls scheduled a year from now. Though Sardinhbab has maintained silence on plans to seek re-election in 2024, sources said the four-time MP is bracing up to throw his hat in the election ring once again next year if health permits and if he gets the nomination from the party leadership. Wait and watch.

Is Girish eyeing Cong ticket for S Goa Lok Sabha polls?

Is ex-GPCC chief Girishbab Chodankar eyeing for the Congress ticket for the South Goa Lok Sabha polls scheduled next year? Well, the ex-State Congress president has been lying low since the party’s 2022 electoral defeat and post-replacement by young Amitbab Patkar. Sources, however, say Girishbab is not averse in contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election from South Goa. The ex-GPCC chief had staked claim for the Congress ticket for South Goa Lok Sabha in 2019, but the party nominated Sardinha for the ticket, and he had to settle for the North Goa LS ticket. Wait and watch.

Team Kamat has its way over carnival, shigmo float parades

Team Diggu seemed to have scored another brownie point over friend-turned-foe, Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai, this time over the carnival and shigmo float parade route. For, the Diggu-BJP-backed Margao Municipal has reverted back both the carnival and shigmo float parade back on the old Holy Spirit-Margao Municipal square, around half-a-decade after Team Vijai had shifted the parade route to Fatorda. In December, Diggu had his way when the Municipality had gone ahead with the feast fair at old market, overruling objections raised by the Fatorda MLA and others. Wait and watch whether the Goa Forward chief has any plans up his sleeves on the parade route.
