MARGAO
Mention volleyball in Margao and many vignettes crisscross the mind, and one among them is that of former player Erissa Faleiro, who has shown unswerving commitment to the game.
The SAG coach is known for his relentless search for champions and he uses the annual summer camp as a mission to search and hone their skills. This pursuit is not something new to him for he has used several camps earlier to identify champion spikers.
“I have around 32 participants boys and 15 girls coming regularly to learn the basics at the church court. If they show the commitment and dedication, I am sure they can make a mark. I am also counselling their parents to let their children continue even after the summer is over. All they need to do is to play regularly and they will see the results for themselves,” Alison Morenas, who is a driving force behind the project, pointed out.
Faleiro is teaching the kids the rudiments such as holding and handling of the ball and later teaches them how to serve from one end to the other. Many kids with their not-so-strong hands fail to clear even their own side of the court but Erissa doesn't chide them but encourages them to apply more power. Faleiro was assisted by Byran Fernandes, Alacoque Morenas and Hazlit Fernandes.
The camp of age group between 12-18 years commenced on May 16 and will conclude on June 6. Rev Fr Armando Valadares, parish priest of Holy Spirit Church, was the chief guest and distributed certificates to the participants. Graffin Fernandes, Fabiana's Hospitality was the co-sponsor.
