A seismic shock reverberated through the football fraternity as Churchill Brothers FC announced its decision to disband its professional team at the end of the current season, on Saturday.
The announcement was made by club patron Churchill Alemao which sent ripples of disbelief through the football fraternity.
"From the end of the I-League (next season), we will not take part in any competitive football," stated Alemao during a press conference held at his Varca office.
The club, renowned for its rich history and numerous titles, including the I-League, Durand Cup, and Federation Cup, has been a breeding ground for Indian football talent.
Alemao cited financial constraints as the primary reason for the club’s decision.
"When football was declared as a state game, the late Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar introduced a policy allocating Rs 3 crores to I-League clubs. However, this amount is insufficient to sustain a club's operations," said Alemao.
"We require Rs 12 to 14 crores annually to run the club effectively. Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has promised an additional 5 crores, I will be forced to withdraw from the I-League if this financial support is not materialized," he added.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged Goa’s rich footballing history. I request the Chief Minister to advocate for a specific policy to support Goan football clubs facing financial difficulties,” Alemao stated.
“I have invested heavily in Churchill Brothers FC, including selling ancestral property. This sacrifice has not only helped the club but also benefited numerous families whose children have played for the team,” shared Alemao.
