Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed net practice pitch at the Cuncolim ground, marking another step in strengthening sports infrastructure in the constituency.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao, CMC Acting Chairperson Anthony Vaz, Polita Carneiro, and other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, Tawadkar recalled that the Cuncolim ground was developed during his earlier tenure as Sports Minister for the Lusofonia Games. He expressed satisfaction that the facility has been well maintained and continues to serve the community. “It is encouraging to see the ground being put to good use. The addition of this net practice pitch will further benefit our youth and help them sharpen their skills,” he said.
Tawadkar also assured that sports infrastructure in the Cuncolim constituency would receive additional support through the Tribal Welfare Department, particularly in areas with a sizeable Scheduled Tribe population. He noted that despite budget constraints in the sports sector, projects could be undertaken through Tribal Welfare initiatives. “MLA Yuri Alemao has sought more facilities for the constituency, and I will make sure these are fulfilled,” he said, while encouraging parents to motivate their children to actively participate in sports.
MLA Yuri Alemao highlighted cricket’s growing popularity among local youth and said the new practice facility would help nurture talent and strengthen their abilities. “We remain committed to community welfare by improving sports infrastructure and providing modern facilities that give young people better opportunities to excel,” he stated.
Alemao further announced that the futsal ground at Madicotto is completed and will be inaugurated soon. He added that proposals have been submitted for the development of grounds at Guirdolim, Paroda, and Macazana. Plans are also in progress for a multi-purpose indoor stadium in the constituency.
“I am confident that these projects will soon take shape and significantly boost sports development in the area,” Alemao said.
