‘Bhurgemponn’ had a story line very commonly seen in ourvillages and has an impact on our social and family life. The plot revolvedround two neighbours, Pascoal and Cliff. While Pascoal loves his land andprefers to cultivate the three fields left to him by his ancestors and run hishousehold with his two school going children, Cliff has dreams of making it bigby migrating to the Middle East, leaving his two college going daughters in thecare of his wife. Pascoal is content with the earnings he gains by tilling thesoil, while Cliff and his wife are inclined towards wealth, living a lifeluxury, and in the bargain fail miserably at inculcating good values in theirtwo young children. What happens as a result of this attitude of the richparents is the climax of the play which received a good response the audience.
Glen Gomes played a very convincing role as Pascoal, whileShania as Melissa and Welbert Rodrigues as Xembu stood out for their respectiveperformances. The other artistes in the tiatr did a commendable job as well,considering they are still inexperienced at facing a large audience and thattoo at a competitive level.
The stage sets were appropriately presented to depict atypical village set-up, though the lighting could have been a little moreefficient. The band led by Maestro Luis Cota was good with drummer Paklo at hisbest. The background music was well coordinated during the acts.
Among the many songs consisting of solos, duets, trios,duos, quartets, the solo by Shania to a rock arrangement was well received.Later she combined with Welbert to deliver yet another fantastic duet. The trio‘Hindu-Christian-Muslim’ too was well appreciated. A decent solo ‘Bentin’ byWelbert and trio and duos were also worthy of appreciation. A song highlightingthe various traditional occupations of Goa was very well presented by thechildren and received tremendous applause.
