Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club shunted out Sporting Club of Davorlim 5-3 via tiebreaker to storm into the semi-final of South Goa McDowell's N0 1 Yaari Premiere Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Cuncolim Union at Government Village School grounds, Cuncolim on Wednesday.There was no score at half time.
Sao Jose de Areal started off the match with attacking intent.
They built their attack with intent to disrupt the oppostion rearguard.Agio Antao had a glorious chance to surge ah
ead when he unleashed a snap shot which missed the mark narrolwly. At the other end, Sporting Club of Davorlim took some time before they got into the groove. Sporting Club of Daorlim were unlucky when attacking midfielder Parryson Rebello's power-packed shot kissed the cross bar much to the dismay of Davorlim supporters.
Shortly after, Sao Jose de Areal's Bersel Viegas missed a sitter as he failed to put his laces into the shot, with only the Davorlim goalkeeper Ashikesh Shetty to beat in the 35th minute. Sporting Club of Davorlim came close to taking the lead in the 40th minute when Joel Colaco's snap shot was well blocked by rival goalkeeper.
Both the teams werre unable to break and went without scoring at lemon break.
When play resumed, the momentum was clearly with Sao Jose de Areal.
Bersel Viegas should have scored soon after resumption but his shot was saved by rival goalkeeper.
Areal, however couldn't be denied for long as Bersel Viegas seized an assit from Haysten Dias and blasted a smart header into the far corner of the net. Stung by that setabck, Sporting Club of Davorlim regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp and nearly fetched the equalizer but Parryson Rebello's try hit the crossbar.
After that initial scare, Sao Jose de Areal had a chance to regain the lead but Raymond Fernandes blasted wide from handshaking distance. Davorlim's equalizer came in the 69th minute following a flag kick taken by Agnelo Colaco as lanky striker Venson Figureido leapt high and nodded in to put his team on equal terms.
In the ensuing penalty shoot out, Bersel Viegas,Agio Antao, Fredrick Endro and Joseph Monteiro were on target for Sao Jose de Areal while Selwyn Miranda and Parryson Rebello found the mark for Sporting Club of Davorlim.
Bersel Viegas who played a stellar role for Sao Jose de Areal was adjudged man of the match at the hands of Joe Dias, Event Manager of VJT Arts, Chinchinim.
In the North Goa encounter, St Anthony's Sports Club, Marna-Siolim beat Goa Velha Sports Club 3-1 via tie-breaker to march into the semi-finals at Anjuna Gymkhana grounds on Wednesday.
Both teams were locked in a goalless draw at the end of regulation period. With both teams jostling for possession and gradually cancelling each other out, the game was largely contested in the midfield. Both the teams gave each other a good test of credentials.
The second half lacked the intensity of the first. With both the teams guilty of mispasses,chances were few and far between.
Two players each from St Anthony's and Goa Velha Sports Club were ejected by referee for dangerous play.
In the penalty shoot out, Claudio Rodrigues, Pushparaj Mandrekar, Denver Menezes were on target for the winners while only Suresh Thapa was on target for Goa Velha.
