Midfielder Arif Pathan scored a hat-trick as Salgaocar FC outplayed Dempo Juniors 3-0 in a Geno GFA First Division league match at Government School ground, Ambelim on Friday. Salgaocar Colts led 2-0 at half time.
Arif scored in the 28th, 45th and 54th minutes. Salgoacar colts now have 6 points from two matches. Dempo Juniors suffered their second successive defeat in the league and have only one point from three matches.
The match was all over as a contest inside the first 45 minutes when Salgaocar colts grabbed the chances that came their way. The Green Brigade had three shots on target and all three of them ended up being goals.
Dempo also had three shots on the goal but none of them found the net, creating a massive shortfall for Dempo in the first half.
Salgaocar colts had the first look at goal and should have been ahead but Steven Satarkar shot wide from close range after skipping past the midfield and defence.
Salgaocar then won a free kick in the 28th minute just outside the box after Ronaldo Olveira was fouled by a rival defender. Arif Pathan stepped up to majestically curl the ball past the wall and goalkeeper Manjunath, into the top corner of the net.
Stung by the setback, Dempo Juionrs regrouped and had a chance to level the score but Borris D’Mello shot wide from handshaking distance. Salgaocar made it 2-0 at the stroke of lemon break when Arif picked up the ball from Dylan Lourenco and slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Post resumption, Salgaocar continued in the same vein with their forwards troubling the rival defence with well orchestrated raids.
Arif completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute as Salgaocar capped a brilliant win against the young Eagles.
