St Sebastian Union Benaulim downed a spirited Varca SC 5-4 in the tie-breaker to enter the semi-finals of the Holy Trinity Trophy football tournament, organised by PYA Consua in association with Football Friends Benaulim, at St John Baptist Ground, Dando, Benaulim, on Wednesday.
St Sebastian were the better team, with midfielders Vishal Fernandes and Asin Bepari controlling the midfield. St Sebastian almost took an early lead, but winger Sanford Rodrigues’ effort was cleared off the line by Varca defender Francis Fernandes in the 10th minute.
Varca were fortunate when striker Arif Pathan’s shot struck the crossbar.
In the tie-breaker, Benaulim scored through Arif Pathan, Vishal Fernandes, Asin Bepari, Maxwell Rodrigues and Kaydeen Rodrigues, while Clayton Luis, Sheadon Rodrigues, Shanoy Fernandes and Aflon Pires converted for Varca.
Chief guest Xavier Pereira, sarpanch of Benaulim, presented the Man of the Match award to Vishal Fernandes of Benaulim in the presence of Anthony Leo Mam, ZP member, Colva.
