Goa’s Aashreya Naik had to be content with a bronze medal at the 1st Khelo India School Games in New Delhi on Wednesday. This medal took Goa’s overall tally to eight.

In 63kg boxing semi-finals on the penultimate day of the competition, Aashreya put up a brave fight before going down to Menka Devi of Manipur, thus bringing Goa, the second bronze medal at the Games first of which came in swimming. Goa also have won one gold and five silver medals, all of which were clinched in swimming.

Meanwhile, Khelo India, a landmark initiative to foster holistic sports development in India received a massive boost as youth icon, Akshay Kumar supported Khelo India by taking the pledge and urging everyone to come forward and play. The appeal to India’s youngsters to come forth and be a part of the modern sporting revolution is made even more remarkable with Akshay’s association with the initiative. Akshay Kumar, while commenting on his association with the pioneering initiative, said, “I am delighted to see that for the first time ever, through the Khelo India School Games & the broadcast of it on the Star Sports network, young sporting talent is being recognised and rewarded instantly. But this is only the beginning and I hope that the Khelo India movement gets the right momentum through your support. So, come forward and support the Khelo India movement. Saath mein hai Hum, Khelo India!”

Akshay, a sports enthusiast himself, was present at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
