MARGAO: CAC Cansaulim advanced to the quarterfinals of the 47th St Joseph Festival Football Tournament after defeating Cuncolim Union 5-3 via a tie-breaker at the St Joseph ground, Cansaulim, on Monday.
The teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time after a goalless first half.
Cuncolim Union broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when Viraj Gaonkar converted a pass from Viraj Velip. CAC Cansaulim responded just two minutes later, with Deepak Kadam finding the equaliser after being set up by Aaron Fernandes.
With neither side able to find a winner in regulation time, the match went to a tie-breaker. CAC Cansaulim converted all four of their spot-kicks through Alrico, Melwyn, Aloysius and Aaron Fernandes, while Frazer and Viraj scored for Cuncolim Union as Cansaulim prevailed 4-2 in the shootout.
Despite Cuncolim's defeat, Viraj Velip was named Player of the Match. He received the award from senior club member Regi Vaz.
