Calangute Association prevailed over Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club 6-5 via tie-breaker to storm into the quarter-final of All Goa Varca Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Varca Sports Club at Varca grounds on Tuesday. Both the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation period.
Both the teams started the game with an attacking flair and it was Calangute Association who broke the deadlock in the very 2nd minute when striker Aniket Mandrekar slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snapshot. Spurred by the lead, Calangute Association upped the ante and troubled the rival defence with well orchestrated raids. Calangute Association had couple of scoring chances and increased the lead but their forwards were erratic after reaching the rival danger zone.
At the other end, Sao Jose de Areal were a subdued and were disjointed as they hardly tested the rival goalkeeper. Post resumption, Calangute Association continued to enjoy the lion's share of exchanges and had a couple of scoring chances to increase their tally but their forwards misfired from close range. Areal who were struggling in the opening session made concentrated efforts to neutralize the lead and their efforts bore fruit in the 55th minute when striker Prisco Moura cancelled the score with a stiff grounder. Stunned by the equalizer, Calangute Association went all out in search of match winner but rival defenders stood tall in frustrating the rival attackers.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Pedro Gonsalves, Rajkumar Naik, Ashley Lobo, Joaquim Gonsalves and Deep Govekar found the mark for Calangute Association while Aggio Antao, Primosn Dias, Alliston Camara and David Colaco were on target for Areal. Aniket Mandrekar of Calangute Association was adjudged man of the match.
