Calangute down Salgaocar 2-1

Despite being a man short, the Greens fought till the end

Calangute Association beat ten-man Salgaocar Football Club 2-1 in the Goa Professional League (GPL) Round 11 match at Duler Stadium, here, on Friday. Calangute Association led 2-1 at half time.

In the 10th minute, Salgaocar FC’s Umesh Harijan took a long and blistering shot on goal which was well blocked by Jason D’Mello, the goalkeeper of Calangute Association.

In the 21st minute, Salgaocar surged ahead when Umesh Harijan perfectly tapped in the ball off a free-kick taken by Brian Mascarenhas.Calangute Association made their first switch a little after the half an hour mark by replacing Gaurish Naik with Pedro Gonsalves.

In the 37th minute, Yogesh Kadam came in with the equaliser for Calangute Association by appropriately converting the cross made to him by Felix Chidi Odili. During the injury time, Yogesh Kadam made a timely cross to Felix Chidi Odili who made no mistake and sent home the ball with much ease to give Calangute Association a 2-1 lead.

After the lemon-break, the Greens tried to increase the tempo by making two more substitutions by replacing Jason Barboza and Raju Haldankar with Aslon Oliviera and Rosario Mendes.

In the 58th minute, Salgaocar’s Rosario Mendes was yellow-carded by referee Tejas Nagvekar for a foul tackle on Pedro Gonsalves. Two minutes later, Calangute goalkeeper Jason was yellow-carded for deliberate time-wasting.

Calangute Association made their second substitution in the 67th minute by replacing Kouame Yao with Caitano Viegas. Seven minutes later, the Greens' Rosario Mendes was sent off for a second yellow card offence. Calangute Association's defence gave no room to the Salgaocar forwards who were trying hard to have a clear look at the goal and kept it that way during the last fifteen minutes of the game.

In the 89th minute, Salgaocar’s Chatur Naik made a good cross to Calvin Mbarga who failed to convert the ball which finally landed up being cleared by keeper Jason. During the seven minutes added-on time, Calangute Association attempted to score another goal but could not do so when Yogesh Kadam’s shot found itself straight into the hands of Naveen Kumar, the goalkeeper of Salgaocar FC.
