Candolim Sports Club registered a fluent 3-1 win over Shree Nagesh Maharudra SC Curca in the GFA Second Division playoffs match played at Duler stadium, here on Tuesday.
With this win, Candolim have four points from two matches, while Shree Nagesh are yet to open their account.
Both the teams played on almost an equal footing in the first 20 minutes of the match, with the play being restricted mostly to midfield. Candolim colts almost broke the deadlock in the 20th minute where a free kick by Akshya Dabolkar found Pundalik Naik on the edge of the box, who instead of taking a crack at the goal passed the ball to Saprem Diukar, whose strike landed into rival keeper Yogesh Vernekar hands.
At the other end, in the 24th minute Sharan Adkonkar released the ball to an overlapping Vihar Kholkar, who managed to beat Candolim’s off-side trap but before he could finish it home, keeper Augustin D’Mello left his charge to clear the ball to safety. However three minutes later, an intelligent through pass by Rahul Shirodkar was controlled and slammed into the goal by Mayur Vernekar, 1-0.
The Candolim colts got their acts together and levelled the terms in the 36th minute, where a free kick by Vinayak Mulgaonkar at the goal was blocked by a Nagesh defender and it travelled to Michael Dias, who coolly tapped it into the goal, 1-1.
In the added-on time of the first session, a long pass by Aayesh Tari was collected by Rama Parsenkar on the left flank, who cut past a defender and sent a low cross at the goal, which was brilliantly flicked into the goal by Saprem Diukar past keeper Yogesh, 2-1.
Apart from Candolim’s third goal nothing much transpired in the second session. Referee Pramanand Mandrekar awarded a penalty when Nagesh defender Sahil Kundaikar handled the ball when Candolim’s Pundalik Naik was on his way towards the opposition goal after collecting a pass from substitute Canute DeSouza. Pundalik stepped forward and scored to make it 3-1.
