Chadvaddo beat Novangully 2-1 to win the Chelsea Memorial Varca inter-ward football tournament organised by United Boys of Varca at Varca ground on Sunday.
In a pulsating encounter, both the teams played vintage soccer and kept the crowds on their toes. Chadvaddo's Elvis Fernandes picked up the ball from Smyngton Rebello but the rival goalkeeper Mohamed Shaikh was equal to the task to block the shot in the
third minute.
A minute later, Novangully came close to scoring when Quelon Alemao's snap shot missed the target narrowly. Klinson Pereira picked up the ball from Clovis Gonsalves but the former failed to beat the rival goalkeeper.
Chadvado broke the deadlock when Clevis Gonsalves' powerful shot off Leo Martins bulged the net in the 20th minute. Spurred by the lead, Chadvaddo intensified their attacks and Swngton Rebello beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat placement, off a Joel Fernandes assist in the 24th minute.
After resumption, Novangully tried their best to come back into the game with their forwards showing the urgency. Chadvaddo finally conceded a goal thanks to a defensive lapse as Rosario D'Costa placed the ball into the far corner of the net.
Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao was the chief guest for the prize presentation function and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of other dignitaries.
Chadvaddo were richer by Rs 30,000 and Novangully won Rs 20,000 besides the trophies. Proty Fernandes welcomed and proposed a vote
