Chandor Club prevailed over Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club 9-8 via sudden death to win the 9th All Goa Cuncolim Union inter village football tournament organized by Cuncolim Union in a tight final at Government School Village playground, Cuncolim on Sunday. The teams were tied 1-1 at regulation time.
The final saw attacking football from both sides but the forwards were found wanting with their finishing. Chandor had the first chance to break the deadlock but striker Sunny Fernandes could not beat the rival goalkeeper in a one-to-one situation. For Sao Jose de Areal, Darryl Costa was in an ideal situation but ballooned his shot over the bar before the teams went for the break.
Chandor found the breakthough in the 40th minute when Aggio Antao picked up a through ball from Darryl Costa and unleashed a snap shot to beat the rival goalkeeper. However, their joy was short-lived as they conceded the leveller within a couple of minutes as striker Sunny Fernandes scored off an assist from Joston Martins.
The teams showed attacking intent in the reamining period of the game but the match winner eluded them as Frazer Gomes of Chandor and Raymond Fernandes of Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club muffed sitters.
In the penalty shootout, Cruz Gomes, Moses D’sa, Johnson Gomes, Frazer Gomes, Stanley Hadigalli, Joseph Monteiro, Sunny Fernandes and Benson Fernandes scored for Chandor, while Aggio Antao, Samuel Costa, Joseph Monteiro, Darryl Costa, Vishal Fernandes, Mario Baretto and Neville Soares converted for Sao Jose de Areal.
Chandor were awarded Rs 40,000 and the winners' trophy while Sao Jose de Areal pocketed Rs 30,000. Dennis Dias, President of Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Pervis Gomes and Girijadevi Desai, assistant coach of Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim.
Individual prizes: First goal of the final - Aggio Antao (Sao Jose de Areal SC), Best striker - Sunny Fernandes (Chandor SC), Best defender - Vishal Fernandes (Sao Jose de Areal SC), Best half - Moses D’sa (Chandor SC).
