Panaji: Chennaiyin FC returned to winning form with a dominant 5-1 victory over Jamshedpur FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur in their Indian Super League 2024-25 match.
It was an impressive performance from Chennaiyin, who controlled the game from start to finish. The goals came from Irfan Yadwad, Connor Shields, Wilmar Jordan Gil, and Lukas Brambilla, while Javi Hernandez scored the only goal for Jamshedpur. This win marked Chennaiyin FC's third victory of the season.
Chennaiyin started the match aggressively, creating plenty of chances through the flanks. In the 6th minute, a cross from Vincy Barretto on the right wing caused confusion in the Jamshedpur penalty area. Goalkeeper Albino Gomes and defender Pratik Chaudhuri failed to communicate, and Chaudhuri ended up scoring an own goal, giving Chennaiyin the lead.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 22nd minute thanks to a brilliant solo effort from Irfan Yadwad. Starting from near the halfway line, Yadwad evaded his markers with a clever turn and then sprinted past the defenders. He finished the move by placing the ball into the bottom corner of the net, making it 2-0.
Jamshedpur FC struggled to cope with Chennaiyin's attacking pressure, and the visitors added a third goal just two minutes later. Connor Shields played a quick one-two with Yadwad, who created space for Shields to fire a powerful left-footed shot into the net, making it 3-0.
Chennaiyin continued to dominate after the break. In the 54th minute, Yadwad won the ball off Pratik and sent a pass to Wilmar Jordan Gil, who calmly slotted the ball past Gomes to make it 4-0.
Coach Owen Coyle then made some changes to his attack, bringing on Daniel Chima Chukwu, Lukas Brambilla, and Gurkirat Singh to freshen up the frontline. The changes paid off in the 71st minute when Lalrinliana Hnamte sent a precise pass to Brambilla. The Brazilian midfielder responded with a brilliant curling shot, leaving Gomes helpless as the ball went into the net, completing Chennaiyin's fifth goal.
Jamshedpur did manage to pull one goal back in the 81st minute when Yadwad was penalized for handling the ball in the penalty area. Javi Hernandez stepped up to take the penalty and scored, giving Jamshedpur their only goal of the match.
Irfan Yadwad was the standout player for Chennaiyin, contributing a goal and two assists. He also created four chances and completed 14 out of his 20 attempted passes, making a significant impact on the match.
