Compassion FC were held to a 5-5 draw by the Union of Chinchinim Villagers in the South Goa GFA Girls under-14 League match played at the Rosary Ground, Navelim.
The Chinchinim team started with the scoring in the 17th minute through Clea Colaco but Gretchen Vaz equalised in the 26th minute for Compassion. In the second half, Chinchinim again found the lead through Ciea in the 45th minute, 2-1.
Prolific scorer Pearl Fernandes scored in the 47th minute for Compassion to level the score. Pearl again scored in the 58th minute to put Compassion ahead but Vailana Fernandes equalised, making it 3-3. Two more goals from Pearl in quick succession gave Compassion a two-goal cushion before Chinchinim rallied to score their fourth through Vailana and the equaliser through Analee D'Costa to split the points.
Gymnast Swara excels at Khelo India Games
Goan gymnast Swara Godbole performed well at the Khelo India Youth Games 2022 held in Gwalior. In the balancing beam, she was ranked fourth after tough competition from gymnasts from Gujarat, who secured first and second place and Maharashtra with third place.
In the qualifying round, the Goan was placed eighth. In the vaulting table, Swara secured fifth place in the final. In the 2021 edition, she had qualified for the individual all-round apparatus.
Due to the lack of infrastructure in the State, Swara trains in Mumbai under coach Vishal Katakdound. Four gymnasts, three boys beside Swara, had qualified from the State for the Khelo India competition. Rokee, Sagar and Subhadeep ranked 49, 50 and 69th respectively in the individual all-round performance.
BJYM to organise bench press championship
Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) will organise the 1st All Goa Bench Press Championship on February 19 (at 8.30 am) in Alto-Dabolim. BJYM member and Bogmalo Sarpanch Sankalp Mahale said, "The competition will be held in three categories -- junior men, senior men and women (open) and the last date for registration is February 17, 2023, with entry amount of Rs 300 for all categories. On the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, the BJYM team aims to strive towards inculcating courage, bravery and confidence among the participants. We look forward to participation from fitness enthusiasts across Goa and let this competition unveil the warrior within everyone."
