The 30-year-old from Curchorem who reprsented Goa at the Special Olympics at the national meet lifted in all 74 to 83 kg (bench 22.5 kg, 75.5 kg deadlift, 42.5kg squat and 22.5 kg bench press) to top the table. The results were encouraging for Suvet who was accompanied by his father Satish. "So far he didn't have medals to prove his talent, but this time he won medals and I hope this will help get some support from the State government," Suvet's father said.
"We are very happy with Suvet's achievement. We motivated him a lot to take up powerlifting.Initially, Suvet could not enroll in the SAG Gymansium at Curchorem as he was under age and once he attained the age of 18, we admitted to him in the gymnasium where he settled down and trained under SAG coach Ravi Dessai," revealed his father, adding that his son never missed his sessions. Satish disclosed that he had started a school for the mentally challenged in Curchorem in 1992 to help a special child and added that the response was encouraging. Suvet took to powerlifting after the age of 18. Boosted by his performance in Kolhapur, Suvet's parents are hopeful that their son could be a contender to earn an India selection for the World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi in March 2019.
Meanwhile, Sports Minister Babu Azgaonkar along with Curchroem MLA Nilesh Cabral and local councillor visited Suvet residence and congratulated him, assuring government help to hone his skills alike many others who are challenged. They promised to also appoint coaches to train such challenged students.
Curchorem powerlifter Suvet strikes double gold on debut
Armed with confidence and optimism Suvet Lotlikar won his double gold at the Special Olympics Bharat National Powerliftng Championship at Kolhapur, Maharashtra recently.The Curchorem-born powerlifter participated in his debut event and made it to the podium for the first time.
