Curtorim Gymkhana beat Sporting Club of Davorlim 2-1 to emerge champions in final of 19th Benaulim Villagers Cup inter village football tournament organized by Dando Boys Club, Benualim at St John the Baptist Ground, Dando-Benaulim on Sunday.Curtorim Gymkhana played a smart game, putting pressure on the Davorlim team right from the word go and took the lead in the 15th minute when striker Lito Fernandes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. After taking the lead, Curtorim switched gears and pushed their opponents on the back foot.
Curtorim Gymkhana doubled the lead in the 20th minute when playmaker Agnelo Martins picked up a ball from Velson Fernandes and punished the rival goalkeeper with clincial finish. Curtorim Gymkhana also added to the pressure on the opposition as their wing back played an attacking game. On the other hand, for Davorlim it was a flat back four system.
Crossing over, Davorlim put up an improved display and troubled the rival defence with sporadic raids. Davorlim scored the consolation goal in the 45th minute as John Furtado bulged the net off a pass from Brian Furtado.The goal energised the Davorlim boys and they were an improved side with more goal-bound moves. However, their efforts were nullified by the Curtorim Gymkhana defenders. Curtorim Gymkhana had more chances to inflate the lead but the strikers were not clinical with their finishes.
Curtorim Gymkhana won a winners cash prize of Rs 30,000 and the trophy while Sporting Club of Davolrlim had to settle for a prize of Rs 20,000 and the runners-up trophy. Former PWD minister Churchill Alemao was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Maria Rebello, Zilla Panchayat member of Benaulim constituency and former chairperson of South Goa Zilla Panchayat. GFA executive members Anthony Pango, Anthony Leo Fernandes, Arnaldo Costa and other dignataries were also present for the prize distribution function. Shaun Fernandes welcomed the guests while Seby Fernandes, president of Dando Boys Club, Benaulim proposed a vote of thanks.
